This June, we’re educating about Black Music Month and Caribbean American Heritage Month with engaging STEAM activities that explore musical heritage. Start by exploring our K–6 lesson plan, featuring age-appropriate content that introduces students to the cultural significance of drums used across the African diaspora. The lesson includes hands-on drum-making activities, storytelling, and curriculum standards alignment.
To prepare for a matching game, provide learners with the information sheet below featuring different African and Afro-Caribbean instruments.
Once learners have built foundational knowledge, K–2 students can enjoy solving simple riddles about the instruments while coloring them in. Check out the coloring video above for inspiration! For grades 3–6, consider using slightly more advanced riddles to deepen their engagement and challenge their understanding.
Lastly, as a quick reference for teachers, we’ve included an answer key and educational standards alignment information for this specific activity.
Send us snapshots of your completed Coloring Activity Pack or Riddles Sheet to info@thence.us to be featured on our socials or tag us on Linkedin or Instagram!
