An Election Day word search for every grade

Wormly’s Election Day word search hides voting and civics words in a grid of letters, and children drag across the letters to find them. There are four levels, from Beginner to grade 5, and each level has its own list of words. The next Election Day is Tuesday, November 3, 2026, so this puzzle is a friendly way to bring the words of voting into the classroom or the kitchen table.

How this Election Day word search works

Pick a level and a fresh puzzle appears. Children read the word list, spot a word in the grid, and drag across its letters with a mouse or a finger. They can also tap the first letter and then the last letter, which is easier for little hands. Found words turn green in the grid and get a check mark in the list. At the lower levels words run across and down, and at grades 4-5 they also run diagonally and backwards for an extra challenge. Every new puzzle mixes the words and the grid, so replays feel different.

Election Day words for every grade

Each puzzle picks a few words from that level’s list:

  • Beginner: 6 short words in an 8 by 8 grid, such as win, pen and yes.
  • Grades K-1: 6 words in an 8 by 8 grid, such as vote, flag and team.
  • Grades 2-3: 8 words in a 12 by 12 grid, such as ballot, voter and leader.
  • Grades 4-5: 10 words in a 15 by 15 grid, such as democracy, candidate and election.

Tap a word to hear it

Every word in the list is a button. Tap it and Wormly says the word aloud, and a found word is read aloud too, so early readers can connect the printed word to its sound without an adult nearby. Hearing a word, seeing it, and then finding it in the grid is the heart of the activity.

Hints and a timer

The hint button makes the first letter of a hiding word glow. A timer and a found counter show progress, so children can try to beat their own time. At the end, stars show how much help was used, and the timer is only for fun, so no one is rushed.

Standards and learning goals

Teachers can match this Election Day word search to their standards for Georgia, North Carolina, Michigan and New York. The standards are written out in full below the puzzle, and they change to match the level you are playing. Open a state to read its standards. The game is built for word recognition: children find words they are learning, check each one against its spelling pattern, and talk about what it means and, at grades 2-5, how it is built. It is practice with familiar words, not decoding instruction. The puzzle uses civics vocabulary only and does not name any candidates or parties.

Tips for playing at home or in class

Read the word list aloud together before starting the Election Day word search. Ask the child to say a sentence with each word once it is found, such as where they have seen a flag or a ballot. Partners can take turns finding words and checking each other’s work. Older students can talk about where words like democracy and election come from.
