What is the difference between hibernating and entering a state that scientists call torpor? Many animals in North America hibernate, including groundhogs, bats, ground squirrels, wood frogs, and some turtles. These animals become very still, and their body temperature are very low. Others animals, like black bears, skunks, deer mice, chipmunks, and raccoons, enter a state called torpor. This means they might be very still for long periods during the winter, but then they get active at times to eat, drink and go to the bathroom! Dr. Katherine M. Schlatter
