In Washington State, May was designated as Volcano Awareness Month after the eruption of Mount St. Helens in 1980. The eruption was a watershed moment for volcanic monitoring and public awareness in the United States.

Let’s use this time to educate learners on the inner workings of volcanoes. There are four main types and this week we’re focusing on Shield Volcanoes through a fun crafting activity.

Take a look at the assembly video for a quick sneak peek of the finished product! THENCE’s resident artist, Nikita Lai Jing Tse, utilizes origami to create a diorama of Mauna Loa, the largest active volcano on the planet.

Download the instructions, and diorama template below to create your very own Shield Volcano Diorama!

We’d love to see your completed diorama! Send us snapshots of your work to be featured on our socials! info@thence.us
