Students can identify any historical or contemporary woman they would like to study. She doesn’t have to be someone famous. She could be also a mom, grandma, aunt, teacher or just someone the child admires.

Students can research the person by looking at library books and magazines, or searching online. This activity should prompt many words that best describe the person, starting with a longer list and choosing the best fifteen words works well, but the approach can be adapted.

Children can use these print outs or find an existing portrait to photocopy or trace over, and spend time figuring out how to use the words to re-assemble the portrait. See the video for first steps and the sample final image.
