North Carolina Standard Course of Study — Science K–5

Grade 1

  • 1.L.1 Understand characteristics of various environments and behaviors of humans that enable plants and animals to survive.
  • 1.L.1.1 Recognize that plants and animals need air, water, light (plants only), space, food and shelter and that these may be found in their environment.
  • 1.L.1.2 Give examples of how the needs of different plants and animals can be met by their environments in North Carolina or different places throughout the world.
  • 1.L.1.3 Summarize ways that humans protect their environment and/or improve conditions for the growth of the plants and animals that live there (e.g., reuse or recycle products to avoid littering).
  • 1.L.2 Summarize the needs of living organisms for energy and growth.
  • 1.L.2.1 Summarize the basic needs of a variety of different plants (including air, water, nutrients, and light) for energy and growth.

Grade 3

  • 3.L.2 Understand how plants survive in their environments.
  • 3.L.2.2 Explain how environmental conditions determine how well plants survive and grow.

NC ELA — Language (K–5)

  • L.K.6 Use words and phrases learned through conversations, reading and being read to, and responding to texts.
  • L.3.6 Acquire and use accurately grade-appropriate conversational, general academic, and domain-specific words and phrases, including those that signal spatial and temporal relationships.

NJ Student Learning Standards — Science (NJSLS-S) K–5

Kindergarten

  • K-LS1-1 Use observations to describe patterns of what plants and animals (including humans) need to survive.

Grade 2

  • 2-LS2-1 Plan and conduct an investigation to determine if plants need sunlight and water to grow.

Grade 3

  • 3-LS4-3 Construct an argument with evidence that in a particular habitat some organisms can survive well, some survive less well, and some cannot survive at all.

NJ ELA — Vocabulary (2023 NJSLS)

  • L.VL.K.2 With prompting and support, ask and answer questions to help determine or clarify the meaning of unknown and multiple-meaning words and phrases based on kindergarten reading and content.
  • L.VL.1.2 Ask and answer questions to determine or clarify the meaning of unknown and multiple-meaning words and phrases based on grade 1 reading and content.
  • L.VL.2.4 Determine and/or clarify the meaning of unknown and multiple-meaning words and phrases based on grade 2 reading and content, choosing flexibly from an array of strategies.
  • L.VL.3.2 Determine or clarify the meaning of unknown and multiple-meaning academic and domain-specific words and phrases based on grade 3 reading and content, choosing flexibly from a range of strategies.
  • L.VL.5.2 Determine or clarify the meaning of unknown and multiple-meaning academic and domain-specific words and phrases based on grade 5 reading and content, choosing flexibly from a range of strategies.

New York State Science Learning Standards (NYSSLS) — K–5

New York adopted the NGSS framework as NYSSLS. The performance expectations below are drawn from that framework as adopted by NYS.

Pre-K

  • P-LS1-1 Observe familiar plants and animals (including humans) and describe what they need to survive.

Kindergarten

  • K-LS1-1 Use observations to describe patterns of what plants and animals (including humans) need to survive.

Grade 2

  • 2-LS2-1 Plan and conduct an investigation to determine if plants need sunlight and water to grow.

Grade 3

  • 3-LS3-2 Use evidence to support the explanation that traits can be influenced by the environment. (e.g., plants grown with insufficient water are stunted)
  • 3-LS4-3 Construct an argument with evidence that in a particular habitat some organisms can survive well, some survive less well, and some cannot survive at all.

Grade 5

  • 5-LS1-1 Support an argument that plants get the materials they need for growth chiefly from air and water.
  • 5-ESS3-1 Obtain and combine information about ways individual communities use science ideas to protect Earth's resources and environment.

Michigan Science Standards (MSS) — K–5

Michigan adopted the NGSS framework as its Michigan Science Standards (November 2015). Performance expectations below are drawn directly from the MSS document.

Kindergarten

  • K-LS1-1 Use observations to describe patterns of what plants and animals (including humans) need to survive.
  • K-ESS3-3 Communicate solutions that will reduce the impact of humans on the land, water, air, and/or other living things in the local environment.

Grade 2

  • 2-LS2-1 Plan and conduct an investigation to determine if plants need sunlight and water to grow.

Grade 3

  • 3-LS3-2 Use evidence to support the explanation that traits can be influenced by the environment.
  • 3-LS4-3 Construct an argument with evidence that in a particular habitat some organisms can survive well, some survive less well, and some cannot survive at all.

Grade 5

  • 5-LS1-1 Support an argument that plants get the materials they need for growth chiefly from air and water.
  • 5-ESS3-1 Obtain and combine information about ways individual communities use science ideas to protect the Earth's resources and environment.

Michigan ELA (CCSS) — Language & Vocabulary

  • L.K.6 Use words and phrases acquired through conversations, reading and being read to, and responding to texts.
  • L.2.4 Determine or clarify the meaning of unknown and multiple-meaning words and phrases based on grade 2 reading and content.
  • L.3.6 Acquire and use accurately grade-appropriate conversational, general academic, and domain-specific words and phrases.
  • L.4.6 Acquire and use accurately grade-appropriate general academic and domain-specific words and phrases.
  • L.5.6 Acquire and use accurately grade-appropriate general academic and domain-specific words and phrases, including those that signal contrast, addition, and other logical relationships.

Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) — Life Science

K–2 Life Science

  • K-LS1-1 Use observations to describe patterns of what plants and animals need to survive.
  • 2-LS2-1 Plan and conduct an investigation to determine if plants need sunlight and water to grow.

3–5 Life Science

  • 5-LS1-1 Support an argument that plants get the materials they need for growth chiefly from air and water.

Science & Engineering Practices

  • SEP.1 Asking questions and defining problems.

Crosscutting Concepts

  • CCC.1 Patterns — seasonal cycles and plant growth patterns.
  • CCC.2 Cause and Effect — planting conditions affect growth outcomes.
