Standards are proficiency-based (ACTFL scale). K–5 French instruction targets Novice Low (NL) through Novice Mid (NM) proficiency levels.

Novice Low — Interdisciplinary & Literacy Connections (ILC)

  • NL.ILC.1.1 Identify memorized or familiar words and/or phrases when supported by gestures or visuals in informational texts.
  • NL.ILC.3.3 Label very familiar people, places, and objects using practiced or memorized words and/or phrases, with the help of gestures or visuals.

Novice Low — Intercultural & Communities Connections (ICC)

  • NL.ICC.2.1 Use culturally appropriate greetings and/or expressions of courtesy in interactions with peers from the target cultures.

Novice Mid — Interdisciplinary & Literacy Connections (ILC)

  • NM.ILC.1.1 Identify some basic facts using memorized or familiar words and phrases when supported by gestures or visuals in informational texts.
  • NM.ILC.3.3 Provide information about very familiar and everyday topics using practiced or memorized words, phrases and simple sentences.

Novice Low (K–2) — Interpersonal

  • 7.1.NL.IPERS.3 Tell others a few basic preferences and/or feelings using memorized words and phrases, often supported by gestures or visuals.

Novice Mid (3–5) — Interpretive

  • 7.1.NM.IPRET.1 Identify familiar spoken and written words, phrases, and simple sentences in culturally authentic materials related to targeted themes.
  • 7.1.NM.IPRET.3 Identify familiar people, places, objects in daily life based on simple oral and written descriptions.

Novice Mid (3–5) — Presentational

  • 7.1.NM.PRSNT.4 Copy/write words, phrases, or simple guided texts on familiar topics.
